Fishing

 
 

Anglers will delight in fishing for largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, walleye, sockeye, and wiper in the surrounding county lakes, state parks and numerous public-access fishponds.

 

Fishing Licenses: 
Legal residents of more than 60 days, ages 16 – 64, must have a resident fishing license in possession while fishing in Kansas. Nonresidents ages 16 and older must have valid nonresident fishing license. Resident Fishing License: $20.50.

 

 

 

Wamego City Park

Come spend the afternoon at City Park’s two-acre fishing pond – you can fish from the wood pier, grassy banks or even off of the bridge that spans the pond.

The Kansas River and Wamego Riverfront Park and Access Ramp

The boat ramp was completed in 2008 and now includes picnic areas, restrooms and a parking area.  It serves as an excellent place to start, break or end point for those traveling along the river. The access point is located on the south side of Wamego under KS 99.

Pottawatomie State Fishing Lake

On these 247 acres you can hike the Flint Hills, camp on the west side of the lake, canoe, picnic and fish. There are 12 fishing piers, three floating docks, and one ADA accessible boat ramp as well as 179 acres of wildlife refuge and a 75-acre lake stocked monthly with channel catfish during the summer, crappie, walleye, bluegill and black bass.  A special events area is available by reservation only.  Boats requiring registration are allowed for fishing only. Vessels not requiring registration, including canoes, kayaks, paddle boats, etc., may be used on the lake for recreational use.  The park also has four ADA compliant, unisex vault toilet areas. Located 14 miles from Wamego.

 

No hunting allowed.

Jeffrey Energy Center Wildlife Area #2

Three areas at Jeffrey Energy Center are designated wildlife management areas, and a fourth area is designated as the Oregon Trail Nature Park.

 

Camping, off-road vehicle use, horse riding, and target shooting are prohibited.

 

Wildlife Management Area 2

Located 17 miles from Wamego, Wildlife Management Area 2 is also known as the William B. Hanzlick Wildlife Area.  This area is open sunrise to sunset to the general public by permit only. The only access to these some 5,600 acres is through the main entry gate at the Jeffrey Energy Center. There is a guard posted at this gate 24 hours a day.

 

Those wishing to hunt or fish must leave their hunting or fishing license with the guard, sign a log book, and obtain a copy of the regulations and map and a colored badge that must be visibly worn. The number of people allowed to fish or hunt on Area 2 at any one time will be limited. Hunting regulations for the state of Kansas shall apply with some modifications. The following animals are common to the area: whitetailed deer, rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, opossum, prairie chicken, dove, duck, geese, quail and turkey.

 

Trapping and coyote hunting is prohibited. Fishing at Make-up Lake is open year-round. Fishing at the lower Auxiliary Make-up Lake is closed from the first day of duck season in October to March 1. No swimming is allowed. Fishing hours are sunrise to sunset.

 

The following fish are popular in the area, large and small mouth bass, channel and flathead catfish, walleye, crappie, white bass and wiper.

 

Special Note
Jeffery Energy Center can and will close access to Area 2 if the National Security Level increases. It is always wise to call the guard house before making any long trips to hunt or fish on Area 2.

Tuttle Creek State Park

This 1,200 acre park with 12,500 acres of water and 100 miles of rugged, wooded shoreline, has a variety of camping sites, from those with electricity and water, to almost 900 primitive sites. Seven cabins, with all amenities, are also within the park boundaries. The park features a swimming beach, boat ramps, courtesy docks, Fancy Creek Shooting Target Range, nature trails, a mountain biking trail, scenic equestrian trail, picnic areas, an 18-hole disc golf course, volleyball courts and horseshoe pits. Restroom and shower facilities are also available. Located 20 miles from Wamego.

Rocky Ford Fishing Area

Fish from the bank or waterfall.  About 20 miles from Wamego, just outside of Tuttle Creek State Park, the Rocky Ford Fishing area offers free public access. ADA compliant vault toilet.  Look for arrow heads, bald eagles feeding or just set your line up and relax. Kayak and canoe enthusiasts can try their skill during certain water releases from Tuttle Creek Dam, but beware of trespassing – some private property lines in the area extend half way across bodies of water.

Fancy Creek Park

This is one of the more challenging bike trails in Kansas with six miles of hard packed natural trail through cedar forest and native grasslands. Rock outcroppings and ridges provide ample challenges. Camping is available with 24 electric sites, 200 primitive sites with lots of shade and lakeside views and an ADA compliant, unisex vault toilet available. A concrete boat ramp, amphitheater and an NRA approved shooting target range, one of the few available in Kansas are also on-site. Located 34 miles from Wamego.
